Traces Fine Art was created to highlight the importance of the late 19th
and early 20th century artists who worked in the Litchfield Hills of
Connecticut and the close communities of eastern New York and southwestern
Massachusetts. Many National Academicians and Associates of
the Academy summered in the Litchfield Hills, a few making it their
permanent residence. The beauty of this area was alluring to these
artists; its streams, rivers, hills and farms provided ample subject matter
and a pleasant change from New York City. The gallery hopes that by tracing the art history of this area we will bring attention to a period and place not yet discovered by many. A special thanks to the Mattatuck Museum for their efforts in exhibiting these artists, as well as Robert Michael Austin for his book “Artists of the Litchfield Hills” a pioneering book on the subject published in association with the Mattatuck Historical Society, Waterbury, Connecticut in 2003.
